Philippine Senator Uses A Catholic Church’s List of Fake News Sites

The senate of the Philippines held a hearing on “fake news” on Wednesday, October 4, after a character-assassination article by an anonymous Facebook page was found against 7 majority-bloc senators.

In the heat of the discussion, Senator Bam Aquino pulled out a piece of paper containing a list of fake news sites produced by a catholic church. He said the list “was read on all the churches on a Sunday.”

The push by senator Aquino to make the church’s list the ultimate guide in determining fake news sites occurred after the senator argued with an independent opinion writer whose blog was included in the list. RJ Nieto of the Thinking Pinoy blog responded on the list saying, “Asking the CBCP about what news to believe or not is just like asking a lawyer if you have cancer or not.” – BRGY
